Ranging from the world-famous National Palace Museum to the newly launched Tainan branch of the National Museum of Prehistory, a stunning total of 202 cultural venues and historic sites across the nation will offer free admission on Oct. 17 in celebration of Taiwan Culture Day 2019 (臺灣文化日).

Pioneers of Taiwanese democracy including Chiang Wei-shui (蔣渭水) established the Taiwanese Culture Association (臺灣文化協會) on Oct. 17, 1921, setting off a cultural enlightenment movement and starting a new chapter in Taiwanese history. In line with the association's aspirations, the Ministry of Culture is working together with the Ministry of Education, Council of Indigenous Peoples, Hakka Affairs Council, and municipal agencies to bring culture closer to everyday life.

For example, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature is holding workshops themed "cháu-chhē bȗn-huà ūn-tōng ê kha-liah (走找文化運動ê腳跡)," or "retracing the footsteps of Taiwanese cultural movements," in Yilan, Changhua, and Tainan, where the historic association staged several monumental literary events in the past. Participating littérateurs and historians will give keynote speeches on cultural events and literary stories that have happened in Taiwan since the association was established nearly a century ago.

The National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra will also offer two programs in central and southern Taiwan, with the first dedicated to the late Taiwanese composer Hsu Shih (許石), whose folk songs embody memories of Tainan and whose centennial birthday falls on 2019. The second event, an open park concert for picnic-goers, will take place as part of the 2019 Taichung Jazz Festival.

What's more, many of this year’s events are being organized by cultural foundations and non-governmental agencies, including the 2019 Tua-Tiu-Tiann International Festival of Arts in Taipei (Chiang Wei-shui Cultural Foundation), and a free series of concerts and exhibitions at the Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden in Taichung (Ataabu Cultural Foundation).

Many of the events are not limited to Oct. 17, but take place throughout the remainder of October. The full list of Taiwan Culture Day events is available at 1017cul.moc.gov.tw.
