2020 Taiwan Literature Awards open for submissions in May

Submissions for the 2020 Taiwan Literature Awards (臺灣文學獎) will open in May, with the Golden Awards (金典獎) for published works and the Creative Awards (創作獎) for unpublished works each soliciting and reviewing submissions independently. Submissions to both categories are expected to shine brightly and complement one another in their own ways.

This year, the awards will be held by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature under the guidance of the Ministry of Culture. Awards will be given in a total of twelve categories — ten in the Creative Awards and two in the Golden Awards.

The biggest change this year is opening up the Creative Awards to more potential winners, with the total prize money raised to NT$3.7 million across both sections, making it the largest official prize pool backed by the government in Taiwanese literature. Submissions for the awards will be reviewed in two stages, with the Creative Awards open between May 1 and June 1, and the Golden Awards between June 1 and July 1.

To support Taiwan's homegrown literature, awards are spread across ethnic, linguistic, and genre categories, and since 2019, submissions for the awards have no longer been restricted to the literary genres represented. This is in an effort to further encourage people to write in a broader array of Taiwan's many languages.

For example, in 2020, the awards were changed to embrace an even wider range of categories; where previously the awards rotated between novels, prose, and new poetry, now all three will be represented every year, with one winner each in novel, prose, and new poetry categories for Taiwanese- and Hakka-language works and Mandarin-language works by indigenous writers.

For this round of submissions, applications for the Creative Awards must be postmarked between May 1 and June 1; for the Golden Awards, between June 1 and July 1.
