MINISTER TO SPEAK AT THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

  • Date:2012-08-27

Seats for Taiwanese Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai's speech at the George Washington University on Tuesday are overbooked, the organizer said.

Up to 330 reservations were made for the event at Jack Morton Auditorium, which only has a seating capacity of 260, the university said, and it will set up an outdoor screen for those unable to sit inside the venue.

Lung will speak on 'Soft Power in a Hard Time: A Cultural Perspective on Cross-Strait Relations.'

Since Lung arrived in Washington on Saturday from New York, she has been interviewed by American media and shared views on cultural exchanges between Taiwan and China with U.S think tank members and academics.

During the first leg of her two-week tour of North America, Lung gave a speech titled 'Border Crossing: Writing, Politics and the Taiwan Strait.' It was later censored and blocked by China's firewall.

A celebrated writer, literary critic and intellectual, Lung has written 30 books, has a large number of devoted readers in her native Taiwan, and has considerable influence in the Chinese-language world, according to the profile posted on the university's website.
