Taiwan launches interdisciplinary residency program for arts, tech

The Ministry of Culture has partnered with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to launch Taiwan's first-ever residency program dedicated to the joint exploration of arts and technology Arts@ITRI.

Arts@ITRI follows in the footsteps of interdisciplinary residency programs spearheaded by international arts and science organizations including the Centre National de Création Musicale (GRAME) in Lyon, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.

Arts@ITRI will focus on three main areas of cross-sector cooperation — tactile senses and the human body; automation and new media; and artificial intelligence. Artists will receive the opportunity to work side by side with ITRI researchers, have access to developing technology and scientific equipment, and be provided with a space for rehearsal or creation.

ITRI is one of the world's leading technology R&D institutions aiming to innovate a better future for society. Founded in 1973, ITRI has played a vital role in transforming Taiwan's industries from labor-intensive into innovation-driven. It focuses on the fields of smart living, quality health, and sustainable environment.

Over the years, ITRI has incubated over 270 innovative companies, including well-known names such as UMC and TSMC. Its efforts in technological innovations have been recognized by prestigious honors such as the Wall Street Journal's Technology Innovation Awards and R&D 100 Awards.

The 2019 open call for Arts@ITRI will accept applications through Feb. 25, 2019, with three eight-month residency opportunities slated for April 1 through Nov. 30 of this year. Individual and group proposals are both welcomed.

Please note that:

  • Each selected project will be awarded up to NT$70,000 for material expenses.
  • An additional monthly stipend of NT$30,000 will be offered for living expenses.
  • Applicants must be at least 20 years of age and of ROC nationality.
