‘Home & House: Cultural Accessibility Exploration Area for All’

Curated by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, "Home & House" is a special exhibition area offering full public access to culture with tactile installations and assistive peripherals at the Taichung-based museum from Aug. 24, 2019 through Feb. 26, 2020.

The house is the smallest social unit in traditional Taiwanese society. A household is therefore a practical realization of the concept of a family. It defines the boundaries of a domestic unit and interweaves two types of relationships the first being the ties that one shares with family members, the second being the bond formed by people with deities or ancestors through worship.

In other words, traditional housing is both for residence and a place for ceremonies. This exhibition features a variety of media and art techniques, including oil paints, gouache, ink, print, watercolors, photography, video, and installations of composite materials. It is hoped that visually impaired visitors will be able to touch and feel the assistive peripherals to observe the rich performance of Taiwanese art in terms of realism and avant-garde, new expressions of paintings, and applications of new materials.

As a special exhibition employing the principles of universal design, "Home & House" is designed with cultural access and equality in mind. Not only is it planned with demonstrations and advice from elders, it also takes into account the services needed by visitors with visual or hearing impairments.

Since 2013, the National Museum of Fine Arts has been actively working to offer activities promoting equality of services that encompass sign-language guided tours, 3D touch assistive devices with large-type versions of texts, braille plaques, and wheelchair-accessible layout to ensure that everyone can get closer to the arts.

As the Taichung museum adheres to the foundational concepts of the "iCARE Service Mark" by offering activities built around Customization, Accessibility, and Responsibility that also have Edutainment value, it hopes to work with other venues in the future to raise the level of access and service in museums nationwide.
