‘Lineage of Fire: Origin of Biennial Exhibitions of Ceramic Art in Taiwan’

To commemorate over three decades of international ceramic art biennales organized by Taiwan, two museums have pooled together over fifty pieces of award-winning wares from 1986 to 2018 for the "Lineage of Fire" exhibition slated for Aug. 6 through Sept. 22 in Taipei.

The awards were mainly bestowed by the Chinese Ceramic Biennial Exhibition (中華民國陶藝雙年展), which was held from 1986 to 1998 by the Taipei-based National Museum of History, and the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale (臺灣國際陶藝雙年展) that was established by the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum in 2004. These events attracted great attention within Taiwan as well, marking milestones in the nation's history of contemporary ceramic art.

"Lineage of Fire" is also a part of the "Reconstruction of Taiwan's Art History" initiative by the Ministry of Culture under the central government's Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program. It aims to systematically document the nation's progression in the arts, preserve such history and culture, and pass down this legacy for future generations to enjoy.

To help deepen public understanding of ceramic art within the framework of Taiwan's art history, select winning entries, shortlisted nominees, and foreign submissions from the archives of the National Museum of History and the Yingge Ceramics Museum will guide exhibition-goers to better experience the rich humanistic heritage and aesthetics of clay.

"Lineage of Fire" will be presented in four stages to present the humble beginnings of Taiwan's first-ever national exhibition dedicated to the field of ceramics, the eventual inclusion of international artists, the expansion of the Yingge event into one of the world's top four ceramic biennials, and its future possibilities.

Featuring works from Taiwan as well as from Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, the exhibition will run through Sept. 22 at the Taipei branch of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute.
