Liu Chiu-hsiang Art Gallery and Memorial Hall launches 'Liu Chi-hsiang at Paris: 1932-1935' online

The Liu Chi-hsiang Art Gallery and Memorial Hall (劉啟祥美術紀念館), which the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government finished renovating in 2018, launched a special exhibition titled "Liu Chi-hsiang at Paris: 1932-1935(劉啟祥@巴黎:1932-1935)"online in light of the pandemic.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government pointed out that Liu Chi-hsiang, one of the few painters from the early art scene to study in Japan and France, was born in Liouying District, Tainan City in 1910. Liu’s works were not only selected for the iconic Taiwanese art exhibition during Japanese rule, he also received honor as a senior artist by the Ministry of Culture. This time, the curator Wang Yi-wen (王怡文) was invited to set up the "Liu Chi-hsiang at Paris: 1932-1935” in order for the public to know more about Liu’s artistic legacy.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau pointed out that the exhibition is divided into four major parts: "Sparkling Paris (靈光閃閃的巴黎)," "Cruising to Paris (搭郵輪前往巴黎)," "Liu Chi-hsiang's Works in Paris (劉啟祥在巴黎的創作)," and "Copying before the Age of Copying (複製時代之前的臨摹)."

Focusing on Liu Chi-hsiang's study tour to Paris from 1932 to 1935, the exhibition showcases replicas of his paintings in Paris, introduces the journey of studying abroad in the 1930s from the approach of experience and sympathy, and the way of learning through copying at the Musée du Louvre.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau pointed out that the exhibition was originally scheduled to launch in mid-May physically, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19. In order for the public to experience the atmosphere of the exhibition and provide more audio-visual information related to Liu Chi-hsiang, the Cultural Affairs Bureau launched the online exhibition to provide a 360-degree panoramic view that can be viewed through mobile phones or computers.
