‘Eco-Rethink’

A joint exhibition by the National Palace Museum, Yilan County Lanyang Museum, and National Taiwan Museum

Living among the natural world, human beings have been describing, recording, and investigating everything around them to produce splendid civilizations and artistic works of unmatched beauty. However, this enjoyment of resources and convenience has also created an enormous impact on planet Earth.

Running from June 14 through Sept. 3 in the northeastern Taiwanese county of Yilan, the "Eco-Rethink" joint exhibition is curated by the National Palace Museum, Yilan County Lanyang Museum, and National Taiwan Museum to showcase markers of humankind's history of exploring the world.

"Eco-Rethink" has brought together a variety of cultural objects, animal specimens and other holdings tied together by a multimedia design by the National Palace Museum. This is a showcase of humanity's search to know Earth and all its treasures from sea creatures described in legend and detailed world maps produced with drafting tools, to the rarest seafood delicacies and commonplace animals and birds.

Humans take inspiration from nature for daily life. From the design of tableware to art exhibits, links to nature are evident. Nature brings more than just resources; it also produces the vital energy of life itself. These treasures are by no means inexhaustible. Humanity has wantonly exploited and destroyed nature, and now the planet has begun to strike back. Earth is facing a tremendous crisis, and humankind must realize the severity of the situation without delay and join hands to further the work of ecological protection.

In this exhibit, the hope is that through the enjoyment of cultural relics and high-tech interactive displays, viewers will develop a better appreciation for the many other beings who also call this planet "home."
