Cultural Infrastructure Series VII: Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

45 years of architectural splendor

The National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall under the Ministry of Culture celebrated its 45th anniversary on May 16, 2017. Completed in 1972, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a building designed by famous architect Wang Da-hong (王大閎), combining the characteristics of traditional Chinese and modern Western architecture.

Located in the eastern district of the Taipei metropolitan jungle, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall has witnessed the development of Taipei City from the west to the east, becoming a cultural park where humanity and nature merge together.

In particular, designs such as its imitation Tang Dynasty-style yellow streamlined roof, the four corners of the eaves rising into the sky, the rising cornice representing the image of entrance, water bricks plus ocher red steel bricks, and the pillars and beams made with the stone-chopping method, exude the ease of artistic charm amidst the bustling metropolitan area.

These are complemented by beams and pillars situated at an 135-degree cutting angle, the lean atmosphere made by the 1:4 ratio of door width to height, the sauce-red architectural features, and the leaning style of the hall's railings.

For 45 years, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall has been a place with more functions than just memorialising the changing of the times. It is also an important venue for professional art and cultural exhibitions and performing activities,

As the most distinctive cultural landscape in Taipei City, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial is a palace of art and culture accompanying national cultural development and for citizens to share happy memories.
