Did You Know That … ?
- Chung Chao-cheng (鍾肇政) has written extensively on the class divide and life as an inferior citizen under the Japanese colonial rule. His own stories include losing his placement to the region's top high school to a fellow student, who was academically mediocre but of Japanese ethnicity.
- He suffered a severe loss in hearing after a bout of fever while he was serving in the military. The auditory impairment eventually led him to drop out of university despite having placed in the country's best academic institute. He also cited his lack of interest in the curriculum, which placed a higher emphasis on classic Chinese text rather thanthe contemporary literature favored by Chung.
- His 1962 novel, "The Dull Ice Flower (魯冰花),” was adapted for the silver screen by noted director Wu Nien-jen (吳念真). The story ends in tragedy for the young protagonist who was born on Japanese-ruled Taiwan.
