3rd edition of 'ISLE to ISLE' at George Town Festival in Malaysia to spotlight Taiwan's culture

As part of the George Town Festival, the 3rd edition of "Isle to Isle (島嶼島)," organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, and curated by the Penang City Eye, will be held at the Whiteaways Arcade in Penang, Malaysia from Sep. 24 to Oct. 7.

This year, the new "Read Taiwan" pop-up bookstore - jointly organized by the Taiwanese magazine "VERSE" and the bookstore "Bleu&Book" - will be launched from Sep. 24 to 26, featuring a plethora of unique magazines as well as evocative books pertaining to literature, arts, ecology, environment, society, humanities and lifestyle in Taiwan.

Additionally, four "Read Taiwan" sharing sessions will be conducted online, with titles including “Remembering the Taste of Taiwan’s Streets through Food” by Hung Yuchun (洪愛珠), the author of "The Old-Fashioned Young Lady's Shopping Itinerary (老派少女購物路線)," "Creating a Charming Scenery of Reading via Bookstores" by Tsai Rui-shan (蔡瑞珊), the founder of Bleu&Book, "The Original Hometown Flavors: In Search of Taiwanese and Malaysian Food" by food writer Chen Jing-yi (陳靜宜), and "Recreating the Landscape of Taiwan's Contemporary Culture through Magazines" by T.C. Chang (張鐵志), the founder of VERSE magazine.

Another highlight of the event is the screening of biographical documentaries focusing on the spirit and life perspectives of selected Taiwanese cultural people and artists to inspire the public and other creators alike.

These documentary screenings will be held virtually from Oct. 2 to 7, featuring the world-famous chef André Chiang (江振誠)'s "André and His Olive Tree (初心)," calligrapher Tong Yang-tze's (董陽孜) series of "From Ink to Apparel (讀衣)," Chang Ga-tau's "Ga-tau Chang (我不流行二十年)," and well-known director Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮)'s "Past Present (昨天)."

Furthermore, an online sharing session will be held after the first screening of each film, with filmmakers or directors invited to speak to Malaysian festival-goers.
