Taiwan to bring dance, theater, and opera to Off d’Avignon

Four performing arts troupes from Taiwan are set to perform in July's Festival Off d'Avignon, one of the world's most renowned fringe arts festivals, aiming to bring a taste of the nation's vibrant culture to French audiences.

From July 3 to 26, La Cie MaxMind (拾念劇集), Hung Dance (翃舞製作), and Hsing Legend Theatre (興傳奇青年劇場) will perform at the Théâtre La Condition des Soies, whereas Resident Island Dance Theatre (滯留島舞蹈劇場) will be hosted by CDC - Les Hivernales, the National Choreographic Development Centre in Avignon.

Nanguan opera company La Cie MaxMind will perform "The Drought Goddess — Dream of the World (大神魃・世界之夢)," a production that revolves around three mythological figures who try to awaken the Drought Goddess.

Hung Dance, the top prize winner of Burgos-New York International Choreography Competition in 2017, will present "Boundless (無盡天空)," a performance exploring the absurdities and epiphanies that people experience while searching for meaning in life.

Founded by a group of young opera lovers mentored by the well-established Contemporary Legend Theatre (當代傳奇劇場), Peking opera troupe Hsing Legend Theatre will present a fusion of eastern and western classics in "The Youth Party (少年三岔口)" to explore the future of Taiwanese youths.

Spearheaded by blind choreographer Chang Chung-an (張忠安), Resident Island Dance Theatre will perform "Factory 2.0" — a production portraying how human beings are conditioned by society and delineating the insecurities that one would feel upon breaking away from everyday routine.

Festival Off d'Avignon, a fringe event that parallels the distinguished Avignon Festival, attracts tens of thousands of art lovers and professional performers worldwide each year as theater scouts hop on board to seek out new shows.
