Taiwanese modern art, live performance slated for Madrid fair

Three Taiwanese artists represented by the Taipei-based Yuan Ru Gallery (宛儒畫廊) will have their unique artworks displayed at the annual Hybrid Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid from Feb. 28 to March 1. Additionally, one of the featured artists from Taiwan will hold a modern ink painting performance at the fair.

Yuan Ru Gallery will be showcasing 16 works by three Taiwanese artists — Lien Chien-hsing (連建興), Julie Hsieh (謝宛儒), and Chiang Ying-chen (江盈臻). The three artists were able to separate the materiality of their art medium from its incorporeal dimensions, resulting in purely aesthetic expressions of spirituality that connect viewers to the paintings and reveal one's inner propension for life. From this perspective, the artworks focus on the inner consciousness of the act of creating and the real-life potential generated during this process.

At the fair on March 1, Hsieh will be performing a 30-minute improvisational show. By combining the flow of consciousness with the rhythm of her body to meet the tempo of the accompanying music, Hsieh will be transforming ink from a painting medium into a musical one. The resulting work fuses tradition with modernity, providing a new impression of ink paintings and expanding the imagination of viewers.

The Hybrid Contemporary Art Fair, an annual Spanish art fair promoting independent art spaces and emerging artists, will enter its fourth edition this year. The Madrid art fair coincides with Spain's most famous international art event — "Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo (ARCO)" — and aims to become the main event of ARCO one day by exhibiting unique forms of art, networking with a dynamic list of regional and global participants, and curating interdisciplinary activities with live music and performances.

This marks the second year that the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain is collaborating with Hybrid Contemporary Art Fair to bring Taiwanese contemporary artworks to Madrid. The Spanish-language press release is available here.
