Choreographer Shang-Chi Sun and visual artist Chaong-Wen Ting to explore theme of 'home' at Kunstfest Weimar 2020

Taiwanese artists and performers are slated to discuss what hometown and shelter mean from their respective vantages with interdisciplinary installations, interactive performances, and monologues in a showcase at Bauhaus-Museum Weimar in Thuringia, central Germany, from Sept. 1 to 13.

The showcase is part of the Weimar Art Festival (Kunstfest Weimar 2020), central Germany's largest festival for contemporary art that combines music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Slated to kick off on Aug. 26 this year, the festival will be joined by more than 70 groups of artists.

The two-week program, titled "Phit-Nan-So – The Shelter; Bauhaus reloaded: Interdisciplinary Installation from Taiwanese Artists," will feature contemporary installation artist Ting Chaong-wen (丁昶文), and choreographer Sun Shang-chi (孫尚綺), together with performer Hung Yu-wen (洪于雯), music creator Yun-Fang Shen (沈芸芳), and dancers Liu Yi-chun (劉怡君), Lee Yi-chi (李奕騏), Lin Shih-ping (林士評), Joel Gomes, and Ross Martinson. The artists live in Berlin and Taipei.

Anchored by curator Wang Chun-chi (王俊琪), the showcase will be divided into two parts with Ting and Sun presenting their own interpretations of "hometown" and "shelter" through visual installations and live performances.

From Sept. 2 to 6, Ting will display his six installations composed of materials he has previously collected in and around Weimar, accompanied by his own performance. Shang-Chi Sun, along with five members of his dance company, is creating a choreography for the installation, including live music such as "Interieur I" by Helmut Lachenmann. Shang-Chi Sun’s choreography in particular, which focuses on the topic of "change" or "transformation," also gives the project a political dimension. Sun is especially interested in "how everyday symbols can be manipulated to undergo transformation."
