Two Taiwan artists to join impermanence-themed NYC show

Taiwanese artists Lee Mingwei (李明維) and Tehching Hsieh (謝德慶) have been invited to partake in the Rubin Museum of Art's annual spring exhibition, which is titled "Measure Your Existence" and will be on view from Feb. 7 through Aug. 10 in New York City.

"Measure Your Existence" is organized by guest curator Christine Starkman and produced by the Rubin Museum of Art. The exhibition is supported by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Cultural Center in New York. In addition to the works by the two Taiwanese artists, the exhibition will also feature art by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Shilpa Gupta, Meiro Koizumi, and Taryn Simon.

The exhibition will question and address the concept of impermanence through artworks exploring the fleeting nature of existence through performance, installation, film, sculpture, and photography. Exhibition-goers are called upon to intimately experience these time-based and durational installations through personal participation.

These artworks aim to create fleeting moments of self-reflection to inspire personal recollection and reminiscence. The featured artists come from a broad range of philosophical and theoretical backgrounds, yet they all respond to history, change, duration, memory, loss, disappearance, and reappearance.

For example, Hsieh's "One Year Performance" highlights the passage of time and the disappearance of the self, as for a full year the artist marked every hour by punching a timecard in his studio.

As for Lee, his "The Letter Writing Project" invites visitors to enter a booth and write letters of remembrance to a deceased or absent loved one, or to write letters of forgiveness and gratitude. The work reflects on trust, the exchange of unspoken words, and the possibility of making amends.

Additionally, there will be an array of films, performances, talks, and curator-led tours held throughout the year until the exhibition concludes in August.

The Rubin Museum of Art is a cultural hub in New York City's vibrant Chelsea neighborhood that inspires visitors to make connections among contemporary life in New York, the art of the Himalayas, and Asia's diverse cultures, regions, and narratives.
