'Treasures in Gold & Jade: Masterworks from Taiwan' exhibition to launch in U.S.

To showcase the extraordinary artistic achievements of Taiwan's masters in sculpture, "Treasures in Gold & Jade: Masterworks from Taiwan (臺灣工藝大師吳卿、黃福壽 金雕玉琢雙人展)" exhibition will feature 44 works of incredible beauty and complexity by two of Taiwan's premier artists, Wu Ching (吳卿) and Huang Fu-shou (黃福壽), at the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS), running from Sep. 17, 2021 to Feb. 6, 2022.

Supported by the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Houston and organized by the Bowers Museum and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, this exhibition will showcase 17 gold sculptures by Wu and 27 jade articles by Huang.

17 poetic sculptures by Wu capture the majesty of gold, breathing form into questions on the nature of being. Ants duel with one another, gleaming plants take root from stone and butterflies spring forth from a facsimile of the artist’s head. With almost 35 years of experience as an artist, Wu's works find a perfect balance between the spiritual and material elements of his subjects.

27 carvings by Huang show a surprising range of jade’s colors: from emerald green to an almost pearlescent white. Fish springing from water, insects weightlessly clinging to blades of grass, and stone bending with litheness of fabric each push the boundaries of what is possible with the rigid medium.

Wu and Huang have achieved perfection in gold and jade carving. Huang received the title of "National Living Treasure" and Wu's works were collected by the National Palace Museum which made him become the first living artist to reach this achievement.
