Taiwan-Mississippi arts exhibition set for Jackson city

A collaborative exhibition featuring contemporary art by ten Taiwanese artists and three Mississippi artists will open on Aug. 4 at the Arts Center of Mississippi in the City of Jackson.

Co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Houston, and the Association of Visual Arts in Taiwan, the exhibition will compare the sounds and languages that were developed in Taiwan and Mississippi, and examine the interrelations between individual and society from the vantage of history, politics, and social change.

The featured artists will explore the interactivity between local communities, their land, and the surrounding environment through various art forms and artistic expressions, including Hakka music, sound recordings of an old sugar factory, and music made by traveling fishermen.

Su Yu-hsien (蘇育賢), for example, will showcase photographs that provide glimpses of the indigenous Rukai people's annual journey of visiting their ancestral mountain land.

Chen Guan-jhang (陳冠彰) will present the culture of the indigenous Siraya tribe through the video "Local Narration: ______ Says The Tribal Psychic (地方腔: 尪姨說:___).”

Wang Hong-kai (王虹凱) will take viewers back to the Japanese colonial era through "Song of Sugar Canes (甘蔗歌),” a protest song sung by a demonstration group formed by sugarcane farmers in 1925.

Art group You Don't Know Me At All (其實你不懂我的心) will showcase the entire life cycle of local residents, boat builders, and foreign workers and their relations with the naval engineering industry on Penghu Islands.

Wu Sih-chin (吳思嶔) will explore the interaction between humans and animals through a Facebook chat by two scholars who imagined themselves as a clouded leopard and a thylacine. Her video is called "A Talk between Clouded Leopard and Thylacine.”

Chang Chung-fan (張宗帆) will present another dialogue between individuals to express the culture shock he had experienced while living in a foreign country.

Mississippi artists including Mark Geil, Adam Farcus, and Allen Chen (陳世權) will explore culture, society, life, politics, and the environment through photographic works, music, and installation art to exchange ideas with artists from Taiwan.

To help Mississippi audiences learn more about Taiwan's contemporary arts and culture, a forum hosted by curator Kathleen Varnell will be held on Aug. 4.
