Huang Shih-chieh (黃世傑), a New York-based Taiwanese artist, will hold a glowing and moving installation show at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts from June 24 through Nov. 12.
Titled "Reusable Universe,” the exhibition will be the largest solo exhibition by Huang in North America so far. It will present how Huang transforms everyday items into astonishing art installations through deconstruction, decomposition, and modification of circuits and transistors.
Among his artworks, a large light-emitting installation has been tailor-made for the 18-feet-tall venue. Comprised of more than 100 components, the installation, which is Huang's largest creation to date, will change its size constantly by inflating and deflating via a fan device.
The large installation will bring a dynamic visual impact to the venue as well as a subtle stream of sounds created by the flowing air.
In addition, Huang will present a live performance on July 20 at an evening party held by the museum. "Organic Concept” is a semi-transparent plastic film that will be inflated and extended into a dragon-shaped artwork moving constantly in the air and bellowing. The artwork will later be installed at the courtyard of the museum.
Curator Vivian Li noted that Huang often dismantles high-tech products and recreates new works that look intentionally unfinished, and that his choice of components highlight the innovative spirit and experiments of early technology.
Huang's works coincide with the innovation-seeking spirit of the city of Worcester, Li said, adding that his works also urge viewers to explore the rapidly changing relationship between technology and human society.
Born in 1975 in Taipei, Huang has been living and working in New York after receiving a degree in visual arts in 2001. Huang's works has previously been featured at art festivals including the Venice Biennale, Busan Biennale, and Aichi Triennale.
