Join the Washington, DC International Film Festival (Filmfest DC) and embark on a special journey with three indigenous Atayal children in the April screenings of Taiwan's 2016 runaway hit "Hang in There, Kids! (只要我長大).”
In a secluded mountain village, three kids from troubled families find warmth and care from their teacher Lawa, a handicapped young lady with a beautiful voice. When they find a recording of her singing prowess, they set off on a life-changing journey to Taipei to showcase the demo tape.
Along their journey, they discover that nature will always help them and remain a reliable ally even when they approach the big city. A poetic approach is taken to highlight the bonds between the land and the youngest members of a small community.
Directed by Laha Mebow (陳潔瑤), a 41-year-old filmmaker of Atayal heritage, "Hang in There, Kids!” is strong, optimistic, and playful despite its honest portrayal of the crippling challenges faced by Taiwan's indigenous communities. The contrast between tribal and metropolitan life is based upon the director's own urban childhood.
