Spanish samples of Taiwan publications at Guadalajara fair

The Ministry of Culture and the Taipei International Book Exhibition Foundation have teamed up to offer translated Spanish samples of Taiwanese publications at the upcoming Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico.

To help introduce Taiwan authors and illustrators to an estimated 437 million Spanish speakers around the world, the Taiwan pavilion will offer 41 titles that are either already available in Spanish, have licensing agreements with publishing houses in Spanish-speaking regions, or are presented with sample translations in Spanish.

Of these 41 titles, 10 are picture books specially selected by Quetzal León, artistic director of the Mexican branch of Spanish publishing house SM Foundation. Featured author Lee Chin-lun's "Spit the Seeds," about a young piglet worried about the possibility of swallowed fruit pits sprouting inside his body, is included on his recommended list.

Lee, a 25-year veteran of illustrating picture books and an aficionado of furry household companions, will join Taiwanese graphic artist 61Chi to hold autographing and sketching sessions at the Taiwan pavilion in Guadalajara. Lee has also been invited to participate in an international panel featuring Argentinian, Mexican, and Spanish illustrators at the book fair.

The pavilion itself will offer eight curated sections devoted to Taiwan's culture, recommended illustrators, children's books, comics and graphic novels, Spanish samples of Taiwan literature, copyright and licensing opportunities, Taiwanese publishing companies, and digital publications.

Representing 55 publishing houses and 462 publications from Taiwan, the pavilion will host an opening reception on the eve of Nov. 27 to welcome heavyweight editors and publishers from Spanish-speaking regions and introduce them to the wonderful world of Taiwan literature.

2018 marks the sixth year that Taiwan will be participating in the Guadalajara International Book Fair. To deepen Taiwan’s exchanges with Spanish and Portuguese speakers, the Ministry of Culture is offering both a grants program for cultural exchanges with Latin American and Caribbean regions, and a translation stipend for making Taiwan literature more accessible to Spanish and Portuguese readers.
