This summer, the Irvine-based Sun Ten Museum will donate its century-spanning Taiwanese art collection to the Ministry of Culture, free of charge. To provide southern Californian residents with a final chance to see the national treasures of Taiwan before they return home, Sun Ten Museum will be hosting a free exhibition titled "Drama and Exhibit" from June 2 to 19.
Dr. Hsu Hong-yen's private collection comprises some 600 important Taiwanese pieces dating from the Japanese colonial period and post-war era to the modern day, including those by artists Tan Ting-pho, Liao Chi-chun, Li Mei-shu, Kuo Hsueh-hu, Li Shih-chiao, and Yen Shui-long, Lu Zhi-zheng, Hung Jui-ling, Liao Shiou-ping, Hsiao Ju-sung, Shiy De-jinn, Ava Hsueh, Mei Dean-e, and Jun T. Lai.
The exhibition will be preceded by two special presentations on Taiwanese art history and the museum's collection by Taiwanese professor Hsiao Chong-ray and curator Chip Tom. "Love Songs of Mountain and Sea" will be conducted in Mandarin Chinese at the Cultural Center of TECO in Los Angeles on May 30, while "Highlights of Modern Taiwanese Art" will be conducted in English at the Bowers Museum on June 1.
The opening reception on June 2 will offer a free guided tour by the director of Sun Ten Museum, while the Taiwan Center Foundation of Greater Los Angeles will screen documentary films on veteran Taiwanese artists from the exhibition on June 8.
It has taken two generations of Dr. Hsu's family to build up a collection of artworks spanning a century. The vision and generosity of the Hsu clan will undoubtedly have a transformative impact upon the Ministry of Culture's recent efforts to reconstruct Taiwanese art history.
