Cultural platforms in Taiwan and Spain cooperate in innovative contemporary dance exchange project

From December 9 to December 13, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain collaborated with Spanish dance organization Paso a 2, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and the Chiayi Performing Arts Center to host the "Freedom of Movement" online dance exchange program. Five video clips featuring Taiwanese dancers were screened at the Conde Duque Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.

The works exhibited this time included "Drifting Dust (灰的漂盪)" by Zhao Zhuo-Lin (趙卓琳) and Hsiao-Tzu Tien (田孝慈), "Memories of the Tenjo (天井的回憶)" by Jessica Wan-Yu Lin (林婉玉), "Fragment (斷)" by Yen-Ching Lin (林燕卿), "Awaiting (等待)" by Shun-Yi Chou (周書毅) and Bogi Jou (周延賢) and "Stop (逗留)" by Pin-Wen Su (蘇品文) and the KuaBo Dance Theatre. Each of the five works, filmed and produced at different cities in Taiwan, is distinct and varied in style, echoing the theme "Freedom of Movement."

The dance exchange program was originally planned for Spanish dancers to attend artist residency at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts and attend the 2020 Taiwan Dance Platform, and for Taiwanese choreographers and dancers Su Pin-Wen (蘇品文), Hsin-Yi Chang (張欣怡), Hsiao-Tzu Tien (田孝慈) to travel to Spain to be judges at the Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, there was a change of plan. The Spanish as well as Taiwanese dancers were invited to use the Weiwuying One Minute VR Stage app to film 360-degree panoramic videos of their dances, and the videos would be exhibited in Taiwan and Spain.

Through simultaneous screenings across three major platforms in Kaohsiung and Chiayi in Taiwan and in Madrid, the online exhibition provides people in Taiwan the opportunity to enjoy the artworks by Spanish dancers, and, at the same time, enables Taiwanese choreographers and dancers to introduce their creativities to Spain.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain invited director of Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid Laura Kumin to be the commentator of the video introducing the productions on display to the audience, in the hope of further showcasing the achievements of Taiwan's performing artists in Spain and paving way for future cross-cultural exchange program "Dance South."
