“The Eternal Tides (潮),” the latest production by the Legend Lin Dance Theatre of Taiwan, opened to positive feedback at the 2018 PuSh International Festival of Performing Arts in Vancouver on Feb. 3.

Following the company’s spiritual and meditative style, “The Eternal Tides,” which is a meditation on nature and the cycle of life, delivered the unique visual aesthetics and narrative of founder Lin Lee-chen (林麗貞) through the dynamic yet elegant movement of the dancers.

Jordan Peimer, director of ArtPower at UC San Diego, affirmed the visual impact and body movement presented by Legend Lin Dance Theatre, and expressed hope in inviting the company to perform in the US in the future.

PuSh Festival Artistic Director Norman Armour, who was invited to visit Taiwan by the Ministry of Culture a few years ago, stated that he was deeply drawn by the pureness of Legend Lin Dance Theatre after watching their rehearsal during his Taiwan visit, and thus decided to introduce the company to Canadian audiences one day.

Attended by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, and Canadian senators and politicians, the performance was made possible with the support from the Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver.

Following the Feb. 3 performance, Lee also held a workshop titled “Poetry in Motion” and gave a speech at the Scotiabank Dance Centre to guide Canadian audiences in experiencing and understanding the poetic philosophy in body movement as well as the sources of her inspiration.

Founded in 1995, Legend Lin Dance Theatre seeks to present the culture and spirit of Taiwan through distinguished visual aesthetics and choreography. Taking inspiration from local religious rituals and cultural traditions, the company meditates on the human condition and nature and celebrates the eternal circle of life.
