The Ministry launches The 2013 Emerald Initiative

To help boost the number of cultural exchanges among people from Taiwan and Southeast Asia, the Ministry of Culture has launched a grant program called the Emerald Initiative.

The Emerald Initiative, which aims to increase Taiwanese citizens' understanding of Southeast Asian cultures, histories and social development, will be accepting applications until Aug. 31, 2013.

Under the program, organizations are encouraged to invite Southeast Asian professionals to Taiwan to hold exhibitions, perform, write, preserve cultural assets, conduct fieldwork and research, make news reports and films, engage in community development or participate in various other activities.

The program offers grants of up to NT$500,000 (US$16,708) for each cultural exchange and collaborative project selected by the Ministry and each Southeast Asian professional is allowed to stay in Taiwan for up to six months.

Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai has been pushing for closer art and cultural ties with Southeast Asia, especially in the areas of publishing and the visual arts, since taking the helm of the Ministry last year.

The Ministry is also aiming to increase artistic exchanges with countries in the region and to help Taiwanese publishers sell more Chinese-language books to Southeast Asia, which has a large ethnic Chinese population.
