2013 GOLDEN COMIC AWARDS: THE NOMINEES

Taiwanese illustrator Tsao Chun-yen (曹俊彥) and late comic master Randy Ai (艾雷迪) were respectively awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Special Jury Prize bythe 2013 Golden Comic Awards, according to the Ministry of Culture.

The jury committee lauded Tsao, 72, saying that his painting techniques are mature and his insights on humanity are profound. Tsao's recent work titled "Tsao Chun-yen's Private Book” was named the Best Children and Juveniles' Book in the 2013 Golden Tripod Award just this May.

Taiwan's veteran comic artist Randy Ai, born in 1969, died of apoplexy at the start of 2013. During his short but brilliant life, Ai had devoted himself to the development of comics in Taiwan; his legacy includes the beloved series "L-Man.”

In other related news, the organizers have raised the minimum requirement for unpublished works from 16 pages to 48 pages for the Best Potential Award, which is packaged with the Best New Comic Artist Award for this year.

The Golden Comic Awards were established in 2010 to encourage the production of outstanding and creative comics, and to recognize special contributions made by those in Taiwan's comic publishing industry.

This year, a total of 20 comic works will compete for the top four original comic awards - Best Young Male Comic Award, Best Young Female Comic Award, Best General Comic Award and Best New Comic Artist. The ceremony will take place in mid-August.
