‘Mongrel,’ a film set in Taiwan, receives critical acclaim at Cannes

“Mongrel (白衣蒼狗),” a transnational film co-directed by Taiwan-based directors Yin You-qiao (尹又巧) and Chiang Wei-liang (曾威量) received a Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25. Culture Minister Li Yuan expressed congratulations to the production team of the film.

“Mongrel” is co-produced by Taiwanese, Singaporean, and French filmmakers, depicting the story of an undocumented Thai caregiver in Taiwan. It explores themes of immigration, labor exploitation, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Minister Li noted that films from Taiwan have stood out on the international stage this year, particularly at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. He also highlighted other Taiwanese films nominated at Cannes, such as “Locust (蟲)” and “Traversing the Mist (穿越霧中).”

Other films that received awards at the festival and involved Taiwanese input include “Colored (黑),” “The Shameless (禁愛絲孃),” and “Blue Sun Palace (藍色太陽宮).”
