Taiwanese photographer Shen Chao-liang recognized by Japan’s photo award

Taiwanese veteran photographer Shen Chao-liang (沈昭良) received the Photographic Society of Japan’s 2024 International Award on June 3. The Photographic Society of Japan’s 2024 award recipients were revealed on Mar. 29. Shen was praised for his pivotal role as a bridge connecting Taiwan and Japan’s photography circles, introducing the works of Japanese photographers to Taiwan, and facilitating conversations between young students and photographers across the Asia region as an educator. 

 

Upon receiving the honor, he said, “This award is not only an encouragement for myself, but also the greatest support and recognition for my cultural homeland – Taiwan.”

 

Shen’s notable photography works include Reflections of Nan-Fang-Ao, YULAN Magnolia Flower, Tsukiji Fish Market, STAGE, and Taiwanese Vaudeville Troupes. He has frequently received prestigious awards such as the Golden Tripod Award for Best Photography, the Asia Award in Sagamihara, Japan, the Dong-gang Photography Award in Korea, the IPA (International Photography Awards) 1st Place in Professional, and the Wu San-Lien Award (吳三連獎).

 

Established in 1952, the Photographic Society of Japan has been presenting annual awards to individuals, groups, or institutions who have contributed to Japanese photography. The awards are currently divided into five categories: International, Distinguished Contributions, Lifetime Achievement, Curatorial, and Newcomer’s.
