Renowned artist Lay Hsiang (雷驤) passed away at the age of 85 in May. Culture Minister Li Yuan attended the memorial service for the artist on June 23, honoring his lifelong contributions across several creative fields, including literature, fine arts, and film.
Lay was known for his sharp observations on society and history, vividly illustrating stories of people, lives, families, and lands. Having written over three million words, he created his literary works in different genres, including prose, novels, and journals. Other than writing, the artist was also enthusiastic about photography, painting, films, and music.
The MOC highlighted that in his career spanning half a century, Lay received numerous accolades and honors, including prestigious awards such as the Golden Tripod Awards, Shanghai International Film Festival Golden Goblet Awards, and Golden Bell Awards. In 2018, he was recognized with the Taipei Culture Award.
The MOC remarked that Lay exemplified a well-rounded creator, capable of portraying beauty in various mediums. Additionally, Lay served in multiple schools as an educator, dedicating himself to nurturing the next generation of artistic talent in the country.
