Minister Li mourns the passing of Amis ritual preserver Api Renget

Api Renget, the preserver of the Amis spiritual rituals of the Lidaw village in Ji’an Township (吉安鄉), Hualien County, passed away on June 29 at the age of 86. Culture Minister Li Yuan expressed his sincere condolences upon hearing this news. He commended Api Renget’s lifelong commitment to preserving and transmitting the traditions of the Amis people.

Born in 1939 into a spiritual family, Api Renget became a sikawasay (“priest” in the Amis language) in her thirties. Regardless of the circumstances, she has never been absent from her duties, faithfully performing rituals for her family and village. Due to her contributions, she was recognized by the Hualien County Government in 2009 as the preserver of the spiritual rituals of the Amis in Lidaw village.

The Ministry of Culture noted that “sikawasay” carries the meaning of “spirit bearer,” “one with the spirits,” or “the spiritual,” praising Api Renget for her work in conserving traditions. The ministry also promises to continue supporting the Amis in documenting and preserving their cultural heritage.
