The Ministry of Culture (MOC) has announced the Ilisin Festival from Fakong Village (貓公部落) of the Amis tribe in Hualien County has been recognized as one of the nation’s important folk customs. As of September 2024, a total of 24 important folk customs have been officially registered at the national level.
The Ilisin Festival has been celebrated annually in Fakong village since its founding, taking place consecutively from Aug. 5 to 10 each year. The festival features various events and rituals, including a spirit-welcoming ceremony, dance and music performances, and a spirit-sending ritual, all aimed at ensuring the prosperity and health of the villagers. Involving participants of all ages, the Ilisin Festival is significant for highlighting community ethics and social interaction.
The MOC noted that it will uphold its duty, as outlined in the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, to safeguard and preserve the important heritage of Indigenous Peoples. Emphasizing Taiwan’s multiculturalism, the ministry will continue to revitalize folk custom and foster cultural identities.
