Paanifong Fi’ik na Icang (豐福明), preserver of Macacadaay, an important traditional performing art of the Amis in the Falangaw village, Taitung County, passed away on Sept. 25 at the age of 80. Upon hearing the news, Culture Minister Li Yuan expressed his deepest condolences, emphasizing the Indigenous performer’s dedication to promoting Macacadaay, a unique cultural heritage of Taiwan, and laying a solid foundation for the preservation of Indigenous traditional arts.
Born in 1944, Paanifong Fi’ik na Icang was a masterful performer of Macacadaay, known for his emotive and delicate vocal style. As a key member of the Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe (杵音文化藝術團), he played a vital role in showcasing and teaching the art, often engaging with young people in the village to pass on the tradition.
The Ministry of Culture noted that Macacadaay is an irreplaceable traditional art in Taiwan, praising Paanifong Fi’ik na Icang for his contributions to preserving and promoting Amis polyphonic music alongside the Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe.
