NHRM commemorates Human Rights Day 2024

On Dec. 7, the National Human Rights Museum (NHRM) organized a ceremony at the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park (白色恐怖景美紀念園區) to commemorate the upcoming Human Rights Day. The event was attended by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), Minister of Culture Li Yuan, Director-General of the NHRM Hong Shih-fang (洪世芳), and other distinguished guests, including political victims and their families.

During the ceremony, President Lai paid his tribute to the victims of the White Terror. He emphasized that the 38 years of martial law greatly impacted Taiwan’s societal and economic development and stressed the importance of learning from the past to prevent history from repeating itself.

Minister Li pointed out that Taiwan’s freedom and democratic values are built on the sacrifices of political victims who gave up their liberty and lives for the cause of democracy. He reaffirmed the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to promoting transitional justice and documenting the history of the White Terror to ensure its lessons are passed down to future generations.

The event concluded with the guests performing songs that had been banned during martial law, symbolizing their liberation and the freedom to sing freely in a democratic society.
