MOC presents posthumous certificate to late painter Dennis Hwang

Taiwanese painter Dennis Hwang (黃志超) passed away on Mar. 3 at the age of 84. In recognition of his artistic achievements and contributions to Taiwan’s fine arts, Chou Ya-ching (周雅菁), head of the Ministry of Culture’s Department of Arts Development, presented a posthumous certificate, which was accepted by the late artist’s widow, Wu Chiu-li (吳秋麗), on Apr. 20.

Hwang’s passion for art began at a young age. He studied a wide range of art forms—including ink wash painting, seal cutting, Western painting, printmaking, and resist dyeing—under the guidance of masters such as Huang Chun-pi (黃君璧), Pu Xin-yu (溥心畬), and Shiy De-jinn (席德進), among others.

Later in life, he was invited by the United States Department of State to pursue further studies and engage with the American art scene. During this time, he developed a unique style that blended Eastern and Western aesthetics. Upon returning to Taiwan, he devoted himself to capturing the island’s landscapes, expressing both wisdom and a deep affection for the land.

The MOC noted that Hwang’s works, distinguished by their free-flowing lines and vivid colors, are preserved in collections at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University Art Museum, and the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Fine Arts (順益台灣美術館). His passing is a great loss, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations, the ministry added.
