Internationally renowned landscape sculptor Chang Ching (張敬) passed away at the age of 89 on May 29. Deputy Minister of Culture Sue Wang (王時思) attended his memorial service on June 28 and presented a presidential citation, which was accepted by Chang’s daughter, Chang Ping (張平).

The Ministry of Culture (MOC) highlighted the artistic journey of Chang, whose talent blossomed from a young age, adding that he made a crucial decision to fully devote himself to art in midlife. Under the mentorship of master sculptor Yang Ying-feng (楊英風), Chang began exploring landscape sculpture by closely observing the Taroko Gorge in Hualien County. Over more than a decade, he developed a distinctive style that transformed Taiwan’s natural landscapes and spiritual symbols into monumental works of art.

In addition to his remarkable artistic achievements, Chang was deeply committed to advancing craftsmanship in Taiwan. He founded the Chang Ching Art Gallery, which has become a key institution for promoting education and the transmission of Taiwan’s craft traditions. The gallery has gained recognition both domestically and internationally.

Chang’s legacy includes spiritually inspired works such as “Walking to the Light (走向光明)” and “Taroko (太魯閣),” which have had a significant influence on sculpture and craftsmanship in Taiwan.
