Taiwan Pavilion at Cultural Olympiad captivates audiences with inventive shows

Entering the fourth day of the Paris Cultural Olympiad, the Taiwan Pavilion continues to captivate audiences with a diverse performance lineup. Highlights include the Taiwanese New Opera “As You Like It (在恁佮意)” and “Silver Candlestick (苦憐个人),” as well as the the debut by the indie band A Root.

 

“As You Like It” portrays a prince’s concubine selection but with a twist that promotes same-sex partnership, highlighting Taiwan’s achievement as the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. 

 

Inspired by Victor Hugo’s literary masterpiece “Les Misérables,” “Silver Candlestic” tells a story of a poor man of a history of thievery vows to embark on a new path in life, presented through modern and creative Taiwanese opera arrangements.

 

The indie band A Root, combining traditional Chinese instruments such as the sheng, yueqin, liuqin, and zhongruan with Western elements like piano, cello, bass, percussion, and vocals, enchants audiences with tracks like “OnOn (紅紅)” and the well-known “Champs-Élysées.”

 

The Ministry of Culture noted that electrifying shows will continue and gift bags will be distributed to visitors at the Taiwan Pavilion daily until Aug. 10. For more details, visit the event website.
