The Ministry of Culture (MOC) announced the finalists for the 15th Golden Comic Awards on Aug. 1. This year, 24 pieces were selected from 164 submissions as the finalists, with Yu Su-lan (游素蘭) being honored with the Special Contribution Award. The winners will be revealed at the award ceremony in late October.
The judging panel highlighted that Yu Su-lan opened new horizons for Taiwan’s girls’ comics genre with her finely detailed and graceful illustrations, which blend Eastern and Western aesthetics. Yu’s compelling comic works with a unique style were even adapted into several television series. As a dedicated comic artist, she has made a remarkable contribution to Taiwan’s manga community.
Regarding the overall trend, the judging panel noted that the submitted works this year are more ambitious and robust compared to the past. With the maturation of electronic media, Taiwanese comics are full of potential, they said.
The MOC announced that this year, the total prize amounts to NT$2.75 million, which will be divided among one winner each for Best New Talent, Cross-media Cooperation, and Best Editor, as well as six winners in Comic of the Year, and a winner of the Grand Prize.
