The Ministry of Culture announced on Mar. 26 that OuYang Hui-kang (歐陽慧剛) has been appointed as the director of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO).
A renowned violinist and conductor, OuYang is currently a professor in the Music Department at Shih Chien University (實踐大學). He has frequently been invited as a guest artist by orchestras such as the NTSO, Ensemble con brio Würzburg in Germany, Taipei Chamber Orchestra, Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, Taipei Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra, and the Georgia State Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
With passion for contemporary music, OuYang has promoted various compositions by Taiwanese native composers. For instance, he has conducted the world premiere of the opera “Hsu Hsian and Lady Bai (許仙與白娘娘)” by veteran musician Kuo Chih-yuan (郭芝苑) and concerts on composer Tyzen Hsiao (蕭泰然)’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” for a European tour.
Minister of Culture Li Yuan said that the ministry is fortunate to have OuYang, an outstanding musical talent, as NTSO director. Minister Li believes that, with the conductor’s professional expertise and a wealth of experience in international cultural exchanges, OuYang will play a key role in elevating Taiwanese classical music on the global stage.
