NTMoFA inaugurates ‘A 90-Year Retrospective of Liao Shiou-ping’ exhibition

The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) inaugurated the exhibition “A 90-Year Retrospective of Liao Shiou-ping (廖修平90大展)” on Mar. 22, celebrating the printmaking virtuoso Liao Shiou-ping’s 90th birthday and his significant influence on Taiwan’s fine arts since the post-war era.

The exhibition is structured into three main sections: “The Pursuit of Art,” “Creative Journey,” and “Teaching and Advocacy,” offering a comprehensive look at Liao’s lifelong journey. It also features the debut of the “Auspicious and Joyful Series (吉慶系列),” reflecting the artist’s commitment to continuous innovation and the pursuit of perfection.

At the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture Lee Ching-hwi (李靜慧) expressed gratitude to Liao for his substantial contributions to the promotion of printmaking, including his role in establishing the Taiwan Society of Printmaking and initiating the Taiwan International Print Biennial.

The printmaker said that, throughout his artistic career, he has always encouraged his students to experiment with new approaches and foster creative autonomy. Liao thanked the support from various field to make the exhibition happen, hoping more people will get a better understanding of his creative process.

NTMoFA Director Chen Kuang-yi (陳貺怡) noted that Liao, often referred to as “the father of modern printmaking” in Taiwan, was an apprentice at Atelier 17, a renowned art studio in Paris where world-famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall had created their works. She added that Stanley William Hayter, the studio’s founder, praised Liao’s exceptional talent and his ability to fuse Eastern aesthetics into his work.
