The National Museum of Prehistory (NMP) inaugurated the exhibition “Who Were the First People? (發現第一人)” on Mar. 27, exploring various aspects of prehistoric human life based on discoveries from Liang Island (亮島) in Lienchiang County (連江縣) and the Southern Taiwan Science Park.

Chang Yu-chuang (張祐創), Chief Secretary of the Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, noted that archaeological findings indicate the human activity on Liang Island dates back 8,300 years, while the oldest human fossil on Taiwan proper can be traced to 4,800 years ago.

Wu Hsiao-yun (吳曉雲), director of Department of Culture, Lienchiang County Government, emphasized the significance of the Liang Island site, which has been designated a national-level archaeological site, highlighting its role in the cultural history of the Matsu (馬祖) region.

The Museum of Archaeology, Tainan Branch of the NMP, the exhibition showcases Neolithic-era human remains, Taiwan’s first dog, and the earliest evidence of rice cultivation. With interactive installations, the exhibition provides an engaging and immersive experience for visitors.
