The National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL) is presenting the exhibition “Based on a True Story: The Silencing and Uprising of Contemporary Gender (改編自真人真事:當代性別事件的噤聲與反抗)” at the Taiwan Literature Base in Taipei. Inaugurated on Apr. 9, the exhibition runs through Oct. 12.
Focusing on oppression and violence as portrayed in Taiwanese literature, the exhibition offers a space for collective healing. Featured works include those by Qiu Miao-jin (邱妙津), Lin Yi-han (林奕含), Liu Chih-yu (劉芷妤), among others.
Also on display is “Ah Fei (油麻菜籽),” a 1984 film adapted from the novel of the same name, recently restored by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute.
NMTL director Chen Ying-fang (陳瑩芳) noted that literature not only provides comfort but also serves as a powerful tool for speaking out and promoting social progress. She invited the public to visit the exhibition to uncover and confront social injustices through literature.
