The National Museum of History (NMH) held the opening ceremony for the exhibition “An Educator’s Artful Colors: Works by Chung Kui-ying, a First-generation Female Artist in Post-war Taiwan” on Apr. 28. Running until Jul. 6, the exhibition is part of the NMH’s “Masters of Art” special exhibition series.
During the opening ceremony, Minister of Culture Li Yuan noted that “Masters of Art” series has thus far featured exhibitions on Li Chi-mao (李奇茂), Lee Zai-qian (李再鈐), and Chung Kui-ying (鍾桂英), each representing a major artistic influence in Taiwan over the past century.
NMH Director Hung Shih-yu (洪世佑) remarked that Chung documented Taiwan’s societal and environmental changes through her brushwork. A student of renowned artist Liao Chi-chun (廖繼春), she is known as a gentle devotee of Fauvism for bright colors and bold contrasts on her canvas, reflecting both the vitality and intellectual depth of a pioneering female artist.
The 94-year-old Chung said that, having dedicated herself to art education for four decades, she is proud to have taught many outstanding students. She expects that more people will develop an interest in arts to enrich their everyday life.
The NMH noted that the pieces featured in this exhibition exemplify Chung’s unwavering dedication to color and her relentless experimental spirit. Like stepping into a color laboratory, her works at each stage showcase different groundbreaking achievements.
