NCPI inaugurates photography exhibition featuring a century of Taiwanese works

The National Center of Photography and Images (NCPI) in Taipei inaugurated the exhibition titled “Self-Gaze: The Artist and the Image of the Self” on May 17. This exhibition explores photography works related to the theme of self-image created by Taiwanese photographers.

“Self-Gaze: The Artist and the Image of the Self” showcases works from different periods, spanning the Japanese Colonial rule, post-war, post-martial law, to the contemporary era. It explores the various manifestations of self-image in mirrors and the translational thinking behind self-images, reflecting questions and recognition of self-identity and the subject-object relationship.

Chen Kuang-yi (陳貺怡), the director of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, noted that this exhibition aims to construct the history and narrative of Taiwanese photography and highlight the significance of photography as an art form. Displaying over 100 pieces from 50 artists, this exhibition unveils the artists’ courage to challenge themselves and further investigate the world of photography, she added.

The exhibition runs until Sept. 22. For more information, please visit NCPI’s website.
