In 2021, Müller Chamber Choir won the 32nd Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music for their album “Tribute to Love (木色III─愛的禮讚).”
Müller Chamber Choir is a male chamber choir founded by music-loving alumni of Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School (臺北市立建國高級中學) in July 1999. Since its establishment, the choir has been dedicated to the ideal of “refining the art of male chorus.” It presents choral music imbued with a profound artistic significance, conveying the exquisite beauty of music to its listeners.
The name of the choir in Mandarin “木樓 (mu lou),” literally meaning “wooden building,” comes from the wood-built music classroom in Chien Kuo High School. For more than two decades, the choir has cultivated many young men who are passionate about choral singing. Through singing, the chorus group shared their life experiences and created wonderful memories for the audience.
Since 2013, Peng Meng-hsien (彭孟賢) has served as Müller Chamber Choir’s artistic director and conductor. Under her leadership, the choir was selected for the “Taiwan Top Performing Art Groups” project launched by the National Culture and Arts Foundation (國家文化藝術基金會) from 2018 to 2021 and became one of the performing art groups subsidized by the Ministry of Culture in 2011-2013 and 2016-2017. In 2015, the choir was chosen as Taipei’s outstanding performing art group.
In July 2015, the Müller Chamber Choir traveled to Germany to participate in the 9th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition. After winning three gold medals in the categories of Folklore, Sacred Choral Music a cappella, and Chamber Choirs & Vocal Ensembles a cappella, they entered the Grand Prize competition and were crowned champion. Songs selected by Müller were diverse and difficult, and the choir’s performances were unanimously praised by the judges, who gave commendations for their musical interpretation and artistic presentation.
The next year, the Müller Chamber Choir participated in the World Choir Games 2016, winning three golds in the categories of Sacred Choral Music a cappella, Male Chamber Choirs, and Contemporary Music. They set a new record in the Male Chamber Choirs category with a score of 97.38, with three of the seven judges giving them full marks. During the award ceremony, the choir received a thunderous ovation for becoming the world champion.
In July 2017, Müller Chamber Choir was invited to perform at the Singapore International Choral Festival and later collaborated with Sin Chew Daily (星洲日報) to put on a concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the invitation of China’s Fujian Art Education Federation (福建省藝術教育協會), the choir went to Fuzhou and Xiamen to perform in many concerts, serving as a demonstration team at the Cross-strait Choral Seminar in 2017 and 2018. In February 2019, the choir was invited by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) to perform in the United States. In 2020, invited by the International Federation for Choral Music, Müller was about to sing at the World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM), but the event was ultimately unable to take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Interkultur Foundation in Germany, the Müller Chamber Choir ranks seventh among the top 1,000 choirs in the world. They are the four-time winner of the World Choir Games in the Male Chamber Choirs category, which resulted from their polished performances. The choir showcases Taiwan’s cultural prowess through singing.
To maintain the creative energy of choral music in Taiwan, Müller has launched a choral commissioning project since 2011. With a specific theme each year, the choir collaborates with different artists, including composers and literary writers, to present the beauty of Taiwan. They have produced several albums such as “Requiem Pro Amor (致愛)” in 2011, “A Dialogue between Literature and Music (文學與音樂的對話)” in 2012, “Songs of the Isles (吹動島嶼的風)” in 2014, “Wish for the World (世界祈願‧黎明東昇)” in 2018, and “The Legends of Fort (傳奇.堡灣)” in 2023.
