Organized by National Center of Photography and Images (NCPI), the online photo exhibition “Out of the Shadows (行過幽谷)” highlights photographer Chou Ching-hui (周慶輝)’s series of the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium (樂生療養院), a specialized hospital for lepers in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
After a year of “journalistic labor”, Chou Ching-Hui started becoming aware that he needed a space for himself and self-expression. He has photographed the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium since the 1990s. The remnant images seem to have predicted the sanatorium’s fate of unavoidable disappearance, leaving only the black-and-white images to recount the endless cycle of life, death and feeling of helplessness in the wards. The audience today can only perceive the realty and time preserved in the photographs and the traces of faded existences through the discolored names, the images of the space, and the notes of archive photos.
