The National Center of Photography and Images (NCPI) is showing the images of Taiwan’s tea industry in the 19th industry through the online exhibition “Time For A Cup of Tea: George Uvedale Price and His Reminiscences of North Formosa (給我一盞茶的時間:攝影家普萊斯與他的《北福爾摩沙的回憶》).”
During the 1870s, photographer George Uvedale Price traveled along the coastal regions of Fujian and Taiwan, documenting the tea trade with his camera. His photographs capture the landscapes of late 19th-century Taiwan, depicting people of various ethnicities, genders, and social classes, along with their religious celebrations and economic activities.
In the 19th century, Europeans were captivated by Taiwan’s Oolong tea, competing to acquire the exquisite leaves from the Far East. In his photobook “Reminiscences of North Formosa,” Price observed the tea-making process from an outsider’s perspective, carefully writing descriptions for each photograph and sharing his views on Taiwan with his family.
