The National Center for Photography and Images (NCPI) launched the online photography exhibition “The Pursuit of Zhen: Liu An-ming (寫實的純真:劉安明的紀實散策).” Curated by Wei Chu-chiun (魏竹君), associate professor in the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, the exhibition showcases the snapshots by photographer Liu An-ming (劉安明, 1928-2022), who dedicated his life to capturing the images of natural beauty and cultural landscapes of southern Taiwan.
Liu An-ming began his photography career at the age of 15 as an apprentice in a Japanese-owned photo studio. In 1945, following the nationwide replacement of national ID cards and the increased demand for ID photos, Liu opened his own studio, “真藝相館 (meaning ‘True Art Studio’).” In the 1960s, alongside his peers, he documented the transformation of Taiwan’s cities and villages, becoming known for his commitment to realistic representation.
The exhibition features 39 selected works from Liu’s extensive collection of over 2,000 pieces spanning more than four decades. It highlights scenes from southern Taiwan, including areas such as Meinong (美濃), Cishan (旗山), Donggang (東港), and Wandan (萬丹).
