Organized by the National Center of Photography and Images (NCPI), the exhibition “Collection Unveiled: Taiwan in Photo Albums from the Japanese Colonial Period (典藏開卷:日治時期寫真帖的臺灣)” was open on Sept. 5, offering a glimpse into the rich products, local customs, and daily life of Taiwan in the early 20th century.
This exhibition features three photo albums: “The Prince Regent Hirohito’s Visit to Taiwan (行啟紀念寫真帖),” “The 1919 Cholera Pandemic in Taipei (大政八年台北廳下虎列拉流行概況),” and “Taiwan Shashin Tsuushin (臺灣寫真通信).”
This is the first time the NCPI has hosted an exhibition centered on photo albums from the Japanese colonial period in its collection, displaying a wide array of pictures and texts to provide historical context. The exhibition is the result of collaborative work between the NCPI and scholars, who have been investigating these images and their stories since 2020.
The exhibition is set to run until Jan. 5, 2025. For more information, visit the NCPI website.
