NHRM launches 'The Historical Scenarios of the White Terror in Taiwan' exhibition

The National Human Rights Museum (NHRM) will be holding a human rights themed exhibition titled "The Historical Scenarios of the White Terror in Taiwan (白色恐怖歷史現場)" starting from July 24 at the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park's (白色恐怖景美紀念園區) first, second, and third barracks.

The exhibition uses the latest historical data and research from recent years to fully present the historical context of Taiwan's previous authoritarian system. In addition to featuring historical cases from left-wing movements, independence movements, it will also showcase lesser known cases from the military, indigenous tribes, and the Kinmen-Matsu area. Moreover, it will present resistance from different generations in the face of authoritarianism, supplemented by a large number of judgements proof letters, and oral history. It is hoped that visitors will re-examine the memory of the White Terror through the perspective of human rights while being immersed in the historical scenes of human rights violation.

This exhibition is organized into three separate sections: "About the Authoritarian System," "Political Prisoners and Jing-Mei Park," and "Transitional Justice in Taiwan."

"About the Authoritarian System" at the first barrack focuses on the various laws and regulations of authoritarian rule and their impact on people. It displays the diverse thoughts and actions taken by different groups in society under an oppressive climate.

"Political Prisoners and Jing-Mei Park" located in the second barrack showcases the investigation of unjust sites in recent years to help one understand the difficulties faced by political victims in different handling procedures such as interrogation, detention, trial, and execution. It will allow for a deeper understanding of the highly institutionalized structure of human rights violations.

"Transitional Justice in Taiwan" at the third barrack explores the evolution and mission of transitional justice, and is paired with the two exhibitions "Prisoners Outside Prison" and "Belated Suicide Notes" to highlight the will of the political victims in defiance of authoritarianism as well as human rights violations experienced by family members.

"The Historical Scenarios of the White Terror in Taiwan" is the first large-scale and systematic display of political archives by the NHRM in recent years. The exhibition will be officially opened for appointment visits starting on July 24.
