Founded in 1978, the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI) serves as a specialized institute for preserving Taiwan's film, audiovisual and cultural assets. TFAI is the only administrative institution in Taiwan that specializes in the collection of audiovisual assets, with the mission of restoring and promoting the collection of audiovisual assets and making them available to the public. Its major functions include:

1. Conservation, preservation, restoration, marketing of films and audiovisual cultural assets and open museums for digital display and exhibitions
2. Promote video aesthetics education and international exchange of film and audiovisual cultural assets
3. Conduct large-scale oral history collection and work on research projects related to film, television, radio culture and history
4. Operate and manage the Center and its film and audiovisual facilities
5. Assist the government in film and audiovisual cultural promotion
6. Commissioned to manage the operation of film and audiovisual facilities
7. Publish international publications and involve in overseas promotion and cooperation to promote domestic films
8. Other matters related to film and audiovisual culture
