TCC in New York shares old photos to commemorate its 30th anniversary

The Taipei Cultural Center (TCC) in New York, which was established as the first overseas office of Taiwan's Ministry of Culture in 1991, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. To commemorate this special day, TCC posted three old photographs on its social media.

TCC in New York was formerly known as "The Chinese Information and Culture Center (中華新聞文化中心)." It was established on August 14, 1991, and on this day, many distinguished guests were invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including Ting Mao-shih (丁懋時), Taiwan’s representative to the US, Shao Yu-ming (邵玉銘), the director general of the Government Information Office of the Executive Yuan, Yu Yuch-chao (余玉照), the director general from the Council for Cultural Affairs (now known as the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan), Natale H. Bellocchi (白樂崎), the chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, and David Dinkins (丁勤時), the mayor of New York City.

To mark the beginning, the first-ever performance was performed by Fu Hsing Chinese Opera (復興劇團), Chinese music, acrobatics, and among others. A critic in the New York Times reported that "the Fu Hsing Chinese Opera Troupe's current visit to New York is a pleasant excuse to make the acquaintance of a new attractive performing space: the 234-seat Taipei Theater deep in the bowels of the McGraw-Hill Building on the Avenue of the Americas at 49th Street."

After the establishment of TCC in New York, it was later followed by additional centers in Paris and Hong Kong.

Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te stated in a press release that he hoped the center could continuously expand performance spaces for Taiwanese artists and teams to present the abundant beauty of Taiwanese art to international society.
